China (mainland) ¨C China is 11th Five-Year Plan has laid out specific targets for the region is passive component industry, specifying priority developments for ultra small MLCC, chip aluminum electrolytic capacitors, chip tantalum capacitors and chip inductors. The plan, a schedule of holistic economic development scenario from 2006 to 2010, seeks to increase China is chip component supply and take up 90 percent of its passive component shipments. It aims for the region to corner about 30 percent of worldwide market share and about 50 percent of the domestic market. The plan specifies manufacturers to upgrade production lines and broaden product offerings. Suppliers are now focusing on creating more compact and highly integrated eco-friendly units. Several government institutions are also required to develop chip resistors for specific applications. For instance, the State Science and Technology Commission Project and the National Information & Technology Association Project are developing high-precision chip resistors and NTC chip thermistors, respectively. Fenghua Advanced Technology, a leading manufacturer of passive components in China, ranks eighth in the world. It ships about 100 billion passive components annually. Its other products include chip multilayer ceramic capacitors, chip resistors, chip inductors, miniature aluminum electrolytic capacitors, chip tantalum electrolytic capacitors, chip diodes, chip triodes, thick film hybrid ICs, sensors, Li-ion battery cores and vacuum fluorescent displays. The company expects to complete a new production line within the year and increase its monthly capacity to about 2 billion chip resistors, and 2 billion BME MLCCs. At present, Fenghua is focusing on high-layer capacitors and high-voltage MLCCs. It has an estimated 250 to 330 percent growth in net profits. Another company, Beihai Yinhe, has become one of mainland China¡¯s major chip resistor suppliers since it was established in June 1998. It spends about 5 percent of annual sales revenue for R&D activities. To date, the company is developing high-performance chip resistors and NTC thermistors. It is also focusing on miniature chip resistors that are suitable for communication equipment, consumer electronics and measuring devices.
